My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite: No Satisfying Ending, But It Works

This book and I have some history. I read it a few years ago when it was brought to my attention by Bookshare, an accessible online library for people with reading barriers. They emailed me about their book club and, for that month, this was the book. To learn more about Bookshare, check out their web site.

This year, I read it for Envision’s College Success Program’s book club. If you’re a college student who is blind or visually impaired, Envision’s College Success Program may be a great resource for you. To learn more about them, visit their web site.

On my first read, I gave this book five stars. I really loved it, but, on my second read, while I still enjoy it, I have a different opinion and rating.

Synopsis

Korede’s night is interrupted by a distress call from her sister, Ayoola. She immediately knows what she must do. This will be the third boyfriend Ayoola has killed in what she claims to be self-defense and the third mess Korede will have to clean up. Everything changes when the doctor where she works as a nurse begins dating Ayoola. Korede has to decide who to save, but her decision involves sacrificing one to save the other.

Review

The prose is good. Very accessible and easy to read.

I really enjoyed the writing. There are very short chapters. Sometimes, chapters have repeat titles, something I found very interesting the first time I read it. I don’t remember reading books with repeat chapter titles besides this one.

The pacing is good. It’s not too fast or too slow. It does read like a fast-paced book because of the short chapters. I also read it at 2.5 speed.

The characters are good. I really enjoyed Korede’s journey. While she doesn’t go through an arc, her ending makes sense for this book.

If you’re looking for a satisfying ending, this story won’t give you one. Instead, it drops you right back where you started. It works for this book, so that’s at least great.

Conclusion

Overall, this is a good story. It’s enjoyable and very short. I read it in one morning. I rated it three stars.
