At 14, I discovered the Divergent series. From the first page, I knew I loved it. When I finished the series, I wanted more. I found every book written in this world, including a behind-the-scenes companion about the movie. I eventually watched said movie.

Before I was 14, I wrote Dragon Ball fanfiction. My first original manuscript was inspired by the idea of a Divergent fanfiction. There were so many similarities. I’m pretty sure it just missed the tag for copyright infringement, but I was cutting it close.

My Divergent phase was my favorite as a teenager. I reread it during quarantine and all the nostalgia came back to me. I still love this series. It reminds me so much of the books I enjoyed as a teenager. Books I still gravitate to sometimes.

After Divergent, I read their next series, Carve the Mark. The End and Other Beginnings: Stories from the Future. The first book of The Chosen Ones series.

I found out about Poster Girl through a Goodreads email. I preordered it immediately. I couldn’t wait to read it. I was especially happy because I found out about Arch-Conspirator, her newest novella. I’ll be giving a review of that soon.

In any case, I’m very excited to share my debut Veronica Roth review. I also can’t wait to see if you have any thoughts in the comments.

Synopsis

Sonya Kantor desperately searches for a missing girl. On her journey, she uncovers many secrets kept by her family and community.

Book Information

Genre: Dystopia
Category: Adult
Explicit violence: Yes, but not extremely graphic
Explicit sex: There’s only one scene, but it’s not very explicit
Content warning I noticed: There’s a very heavy emphasis on conditioning

This is a standalone.

Review

The prose is great. Accessible and easy to read.

The pacing is great. It’s not too slow or too fast. It builds up the events super well.

The themes are explored well. I do think the theme of conditioning could have been explored better, but, for the most part, it’s good.

The characters are great. Roth is really good at crafting characters and making me love them. The ones we get to see are strong.

There’s a romantic plotline, but it’s not a big focus of the story. It’s okay. It’s the first time I haven’t enjoyed a romantic plotline in a Roth story.

Conclusion

Overall, it’s a good story. I enjoyed it very much. I rated it four stars.
