Hi, everyone! I’m Anexis and my pronouns are they/them. Nice to meet you! I’m a blind college student majoring in english with a concentration in creative writing. I’m a content creator who began on YouTube with the channel Videl Blind-The Blind Reader. I now currently run the channel Anexis Matos and no longer post on my old one. I started blogging to share my writing. I’ve always enjoyed stories. I started writing when I was between the ages of 10 and 12. My stories started out as Dragon Ball fanfiction which will never see the light of day because I deleted them. Now, I write original stories that I hope to share at some point. The Grace Year by Kim Liggett: A Commentary On Gender and Society

Synopsis

In order to release their magic, girls are sent away during the Grace Year. However, things are not what they seem.

Due to not reviewing on specific genres or categories, I’m providing the following information to potential readers. While I’ll do my best to give accurate genre and category information, I recommend doing your own research regarding content warnings.

Category: Young adult
Explicit violence: Yes
Explicit sex: No
Content warnings: Misogyny, suicide, and mentions of sexual assault. There’s also a heavy emphasis on conditioning

This is a standalone book.

Review

The prose is lovely. It has the balance of poetic and accessible.

The pacing is good. A perfect medium balance. Because it’s not too fast or too slow, it gives the reader enough time to connect with Tierni. We also connect to the rest of the characters.

The themes are very well explored. There is a lot of commentary on gender expectations and society. A lot of this book centers on girls and the way society treats them. The way they treat each other because of it. How society can force them to submit to its rules, even if it has to break them.

The characters are great. Tierni starts off very judgmental, but grows as she learns, a journey I enjoyed. We also learn a lot about the other girls and how their actions reflect their society’s conditioning.

There’s a romantic plotline, but it’s not a big part of the story. I don’t think it’s necessary. It feels like it was added because it’s YA.

Conclusion

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It’s an interesting exploration of gender and society. Of the relationship between women, girls, and society and each other. I rated it four stars. My only critique is that the romance didn’t really need to be there.

Honestly, this is a hard read, but an enjoyable one. I haven’t heard much about this book, but I hope that this review encourages people to read it. It’s a great book and more people should.
