Before Reading

Due to the fact that I don’t review things from one specific genre or category, I’ll be providing some relevant information to hopefully guide potential readers. Note that this is information I’ve gathered based on my reading of the book and may not be fully accurate. While I’ll do my best to provide correct genre and category information, I recommend doing research on content warnings.

Genre: Fantasy
Category: Young adult
Explicit sex: No
Explicit violence: Toward the end of the book, but it’s not extremely graphic.
Content warnings: Suicide. If I remember correctly, the story is told, but there’s no explicit scene depicting it.

Review

Just like every V.E. Schwab book I’ve read, the prose is amazing. Accessible yet poetic, this prose is beautiful and exciting to read.

The pacing is great. Most of the book is slow, but it builds up to an awesome ending.

While world-building is great, I would have liked more of it. The world and magic are clear, but I feel like more could have been done to make the world more alive.

I love the magic. The author, in my experience, has always been able to make magic interesting in their worlds. Always balanced. This book is no different.

The themes are very well explored. My favorite is definitely the theme of family. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure this story follows the found family trope. I love it.

The characters are great. From their establishment to their arc, I loved following them and seeing their relationships develop. It’s so beautiful, but I expect nothing else from V.E. Schwab.

Conclusion

Overall, I loved this story. It’s amazing. I rated it four stars. The rest of the books I read by this author I’ve rated five stars, but I think more could have been done here when it comes to the world.
