Synopsis
Two boys are warned that they’re going to die in the next 24 hours. After they meet through an app, they decide to spend their last day together.
Review
The writing is really good. It’s accessible and very easy to read. My favorite kind. However, there’s a shift in point of view at times. Most of the chapters are in first person and the rest are in third person, something I tend to dislike because it makes no sense to me.
The concept is great. You have a company that warns you that you’re going to die in the next 24 hours. It’s our own world, but with an added element. I would consider it a light dystopia. As great as it is, there’s no world-building. There are things that need to be explained that aren’t, such as how these people know who’s going to die.
For the length of the book, the themes aren’t fully explored. Because of the concept and characters, so much could have been done. It has a lot of potential that it didn’t reach.
The characters are okay. I don’t have many strong feelings for them. They’re established well, but I don’t like the arcs they follow. It feels somewhat clumsy. Although I wasn’t very attached to them, there was a moment when I almost cried.
Although not the biggest part of the book, there is a romance. It’s not done well. I understand it’s insta-love, but this trope can be done well. Just read Laini Taylor. There’s no build up to it. It just happens, feeling unnatural and weird.
Conclusion
Overall, I didn’t enjoy this book. It has a great concept, but it lacks so much. It’s almost 400 pages and it feels like nothing happened. It’s very disappointing. I rated it one star. I had such high expectations since I heard so many great things about it.
